科学史はわたしの仕事ではないが、気候に関する認識の発達についての本は読みたい。編者がHistorical Perspectives on Climate ChangeやFixing the Sky (気象・気候改変の研究の歴史)のFleming氏だとなればなおさらなので取り寄せた。

取り寄せる前に出版社のサイトで目次を読んで見当はついていたのだが、執筆者の顔ぶれだけでなく話題の広がりも2006年の論文集Intimate Universalityと似たもののようだ。中身を読むのはひまができたとき(退職したときになるだろうか?)までおあずけにしよう。

と言いながら、ちょっとめくって見てはいる。大気中のCO₂濃度について、Keeling氏が連続測定を始めるよりも前からスウェーデンを中心とする北ヨーロッパの研究者たちが取り組んでいたことは、Weart (2003, 2008)もふれているけれども、breakthroughが生じる前の行き詰まっていた状況のような扱いになっている。本書のBohn氏の論文に(まだしっかり読んでいないが)、当時の学者たちがどんな認識の風景の中で研究課題を構成していたかが書かれているようだ。

「核の冬」のTTAPSの5人に関するDörries氏の論考は読むことになりそうだ。政策課題について科学的専門知識を提供する科学者が、その政策について強い意見をもつ市民でもある場合、どのように発言したらよいかという問題がずっと気になっているので。

気候学者のHulme氏の論文があるが、これは著者のウェブサイト http://mikehulme.org に置かれていたプレプリントで読んでいた。Why We Disagree About Climate Changeに出ていた論点のひとつの明確化と言えると思う。地球温暖化に関する政策を求める人々が、社会のさまざまな問題の原因を気候変化に求める「気候還元論」(気候決定論とは少し違う)におちいっているのではないかという批判は一面でもっとも。ただし、実際に気候変化の影響を論じている人の多くは、気候以外のものごとが原因として重要でないと認識しているわけではなく、複数の考えかたのひとつとして気候を原因と考えているのだと思う。批判を、今動いている人の隠れた意識について決めつけるのではなく、(政策案策定の場、研究企画の場を含めた)社会の中の議論を組みたてなおす材料にしていくべきなのだろう。
