人為起源気候変化(地球温暖化)の野生生物への影響とその対策については、まえにLovejoy & Hannah (2005)の本を読んだが、そのあと知識をあまり更新してこなかった。2019年7月、英語での授業で参考文献を紹介したいと思ったので、出版情報を検索したら、同じ編者たちによるあたらしい本が今年(1月らしい)に出たことを知ったので、注文した。

まだ内容を読んでいないが、目次を書きぬいて本の構成をだいたい理解したところでメモを書いておく。

本の趣旨は、前の本と同じく、入門教材として使うことが考慮された論文集だ。章の構成も基本的に前の本と同じで、第1部が問題設定、第2部が(近代科学的な調査によって)観察された生物の変化の事実、第3部が(科学的な調査がはじまるまえについて化石などによってさかのぼった)過去の生物の変化、第4部が今後1世紀ほどのうちにみこまれる気候変化による生物の変化、第5部が対策の話。第5部の話題のうちには、野生生物保護(いわゆる自然保護)をどうしたらよいかという問題もふくまれる。外来種問題の話もある。地球温暖化の「緩和策」(とくに炭素の吸収源)、あるいは人間社会が適応する手段として生態系が利用されることと、その生態系への影響の話題もある。

気候がかわると、生物のそれぞれの種の生息に適した地域の範囲がかわる。自然保護の基本である、生態系をまるごとその場で保護することができなくなり、移動の支援や移植が必要になるかもしれない。2005年の本を読んだときには、移動による適応をたすけるために、現在の生息地と将来の生息適地が空間的につながっていることを確実にする、という議論が印象にのこった。本書でも、すくなくとも Case Study 10 では主題になっているのだが、前の本ほどはこの件が重視されていないような気がする。

気候変動そのものについては、第1部の第2章で、McCrackenが、だいたいIPCC第5次評価報告書の第1作業部会の巻の要点を紹介する形で説明している。予測型シミュレーションの結果から、世界平均気温のほかに、大雨、高温、低温などがどう変わるかを、確率分布のパーセンタイル値で示している。2005年の本では、第2・3・4部のそれぞれにも気候変動そのものに関する章があったが、本書にはない。他の本を参照すればよいという判断なのだろう。
