数量データをグラフにしてしめす方法についての教科書的な本。直接には科学論文にのせる図を想定しているが、それにかぎらず有効なことが書いてあると思う。本の大きさはA4判で、ハードカバーは暗い赤(えんじ色というべきか)、ペーパーバックは灰色まじりの茶色(カーキ色というべきか)の表紙だ。著者は Bell Laboratories につとめていて、Tukey の影響を強くうけている。

わたしは、1980年代のうちにペーパーバックを買って、自分の勉強にも教材づくりにも使った。この読書ブログをはじめるまえの2003年に[読書ノート] (このページの上のほうからリンクした) を書いた。どんな本かの紹介は、ひとまず、そちらを見ていただきたい。

その後、本をなくしてしまった。1994年の新版(書誌情報は[読書ノート]に書いた)は(箱づめしてしまったが)持っているはずだが、内容がだいぶ変わってしまっていて、わたしが見たいのは初版なのだ。2021年3月に思いたって、古本を取りよせた。こんどはハードカバーだ。

とどいた本に二つ折りの数枚の紙がはさまっていた。つぎの論文のコピーだった。著者が開発した、散布図の点群におおまかにあてはまる曲線をひく LOWESS という方法について書いたもので、わたしもコピーを取りよせたおぼえがあるのだがそれも見失っていたので、ありがたい。(Rにはくみこまれているはずだが、それをつかうにしても原理を知っておきたいのだ。)
