STS (科学技術社会論)に関する総合的な教科書の第4版だ。初版は1977年、第2版は1995年、第3版は2008年に出ている。毎回、編者もみんな入れかわり、内容も大きく変わっているようだ。形式的なこととしては、初期の版では各章はそれぞれ1人の著者が書いたものが多かったが、今回は共著のもののほうが多くなっている。
2016年の暮れに出版情報を見かけた。1000ページを越える本を読みきれるとは思えないので見送ろうと思ったが、編者のひとりにClark A. Miller氏がはいっている。Miller & Edwards 編 (2001) Changing the Atmosphere [読書メモ]の編者でもある。この人の関連のところだけでも読んでおこうと思った。
かさばる本を持ち歩けそうもないので、ディジタル版(Amazon Kindle、わたしはアメリカのAmazon.comから買っている)にした。Kindle本には紙の本のページ番号がはいっているものもあるが、この本にはない。紙の本を読んでいる人と参照箇所を知らせあうのに不便だ。それだけならば欠陥とまでは言えないが、巻末の索引には紙の本のページ番号が書いてあるだけでディジタル版の本文へのリンクがない。索引にある最大のページ番号「1078」が、Kindleの「位置」23200付近に相当するので位置を概算はできそうだがめんどうだ。もし索引のリンクをつけていたらディジタル版の発売が遅れたのかもしれない。しかし、今の技術ならば、先にディジタル版のリンクをつくったうえで機械処理で紙の本のページ番号を得るようにプログラムしておけば同時発売もできただろうとも思う。
Miller氏の執筆箇所は第5部の序論だけだった。ただし、その部の最後である第36章が地球環境問題を扱っており、その中からはMiller氏のこれまでの著作も参照されていて、その論点を引き継いだ議論がされているようだ。
そのほか、わたしの観点から重要と思うのは、Harry Collins, Robert Evans両氏のinteractional experts論が両氏とMartin Weinel氏の共著で第26章として収録されていることだ。
【[2017-02-07 補足] Collins氏はinteractional expertsの類型としていつも彼自身を含むSTS研究者をあげていたが、今回は、学際的な研究活動のなかで同僚の専門分野の知識体系を知る人や、科学コミュニケーションにかかわる人もあげている。(さらに、医療従事者が、患者が患者としてもつ知識について知ることも同類と考えている。 ) また、専門知識は「フラクタル構造をもつ」と言い、広い意味での専門の知識を共有する集団があって狭い専門の知識を共有する集団をいくつも含むような構造について指摘している。わたしがCollins氏たちの議論を援用して論じたかったことにCollins氏たちが近づいてきたような気がする。】
まだ内容を読んでいないのだが、目次を書きぬいたので、折り返しのあとにつける。ただし、Kindle版にもとづいた (Kindle版の目次ページを基本に、内容をめくって見つかった見出しを書き加えた)ものなので、ページ番号はない。
各章の題名のところには「/」に続いて著者名を示した。示されていた著者各人の名まえの最後の部分(last name)を大文字にした。(世界にはいろいろな民族があって、これがfamily nameとは限らないが、英語で学術的な著作を出す人に限ればこの部分を検索キーにすることを期待していることが多いという推測による。) ただし、第14章の著者のひとりのTallBearさんはアメリカ先住民で意図的にこのような大文字づかいをしているらしいのでそのままにした。
